of the so-called fiscal cliff, but how about the dairy cliff? milk prices could double next year because a national farm bill expires on january 1st. if lawmakers do not extend that bill it, reverts to 1949 law when the government and not the market controlled prices. because of antiquated formulas used to set the price, a gallon of milk which now costs close to $4 in most places could jump to 6 or possibly even $8. >> it's the most important ingredient we use. if prices go up, it definitely affects our business. we're definitely concerned and we keep our eyes on the market. >> but some experts are downplaying the dairy cliff, saying the agriculture department will stall until congress moves to keep prices down. the farm bill provides disaster relief for farmers. >>> gay couples are now allowed to marry in the state of maine. over the fiscal cliff. happy new year. here's what you might have missed. president barack obama has left hawaii. he left last night, arriving in d.c. early this morning. the senate is also coming back from its christmas vacation to work on a deal today. sources tell us majority leader harry reid will be pushing a scaled back version of the fiscal cliff package that president obama laid out last week. it moved the tax hike needle to $400,000 per household. no word yet on when the house might come back with time ticking away. democrats are hoping that a scaled back plan could get through the house, senate and white house before that big ball drops on 2013. that would be sometime on december 30th or even on new years eve. we want to bring in jonathan allen. he's a senior national correspondent for politico. the top headline on politico is fiscal cliff deal increasingly unlikely. i think a lot of people are feeling that pessimism right now. what are you hearing? >> well, i think what you've got here, alena, is a nash equilibrium to borrow from economic theory and game theory. each of th

was 75 years old. harris: new information now on the so-called fiscal cliff. if congress and the president can not find a solution most americans will see thousands of additional dollars taken out of their paychecks next year and on top of that you will be paying even more at the grocery store. for example, no compromise means milk subsidies will end. and the cost for a gallon of milk could double. dominic di-natale has latest details from los angeles. so, dominic, has the fiscal cliff crisis gotten so bad that even the price of milk is being affected? >> reporter: certainly is, harris. can you imagine milk hitting six to eight bucks a gallon? we're heading toward that because a new farm bill stalled in congress. under a archaic 1947 law, unless the new bill is passed by december 31st, the government will be forced to buy vast quantities of milk at twice the wholesale rate. two bills are in congress. the senate passed one for $23 billion in savings. the house is looking to enact 35 billion. the sticking point the full house of representatives hasn't approved the bill. >>
